TAM Group, Inc. was founded in 1991 by Charles Banning, Ph.D., to leverage his technology management disciplines to corporate I/T environments and technology vendors. He  believed that a focussed group of senior professionals experienced in business management as well as advanced I/T product development could best provide unbiased, strategic services to corporate I/T organizations. These services were built around a core concept of a set of "architecture" disciplines that support technology investment decisions.

The increasingly rapid change of information technology - PC's, LAN's, and relational databases - had, by the late 1980's created complex operational and asset management problems for I/T managers. Furthermore, the promise of information engineering and RAD as well as LAN-based workgroup business solutions was driving corporate I/T organizations to deliver and support less mature technologies within their infrastructures.

These trends called for new I/T analysis and management disciplines other than those of the conventional "strategic information system planning" processes.  Charles Banning formalized pragmatic processes based on his work in delivering infrastructures to support new business areas for major corporations such as GE and AT&T. The key characteristics are:
  • Rapid delivery of a technology framework to avoid being overrun by technology and business changes.
  • Comprehensive coverage of all I/T functional areas to capture direct and indirect infrastructure impacts.
  • Flexible analytical formats and tools to adapt to different business problem spaces and I/T governance structures.
  • Repeatable processes must be established to support continual updating of the I/T investment strategy.
